Hey fellow crochet lovers! I wanted to share a fun, cozy, and cute little project I made – a Cat Hat! 🧶✨
It all started because I absolutely adored seeing my favorite influencer and my bestie girl rocking their cat hats while they were off adventuring around the world. Every time I saw them wearing those adorable hats, I was like, "I NEED one of those!"
But here’s the thing… I was moving to a much colder place (hello, Colorado!), and while I love me a good beanie, sometimes I just don’t want to wear a plain one. I wanted something more fun and quirky!
So, I thought, "Why not make my own cat hat?"
I had a general idea of how to make it, but here's the twist: I decided to use Bernat Blanket Yarn (the cozy stuff from Walmart, yes please!) – and let me tell you, this yarn is chunky, and it behaves a bit differently than the thin fuzzy yarns I’m used to.
That meant I had to do a little experimenting because, well, chunky blanket yarn makes a bigger hat than thinner yarn! 😅
So, if you’re using your own yarn, just keep in mind that the size may vary, and it’s all about adjusting as you go.
A little about me: I’m a self-taught crochet artist, and while I love creating and experimenting, I don’t really focus on the numbers or counting too much.
I usually picture the design in my head and just go for it. If you’re like me (no shame in our eye-it-and-go ways), or if you’re itching to make a cat hat right now (I get that urgency), I’ve got the perfect pattern for you! Let’s dive into the steps:
Materials
Yarn: Bernat Blanket Yarn (I used less than one ball)
Hook Size: I (5.5mm)
Tension: You can adjust based on your yarn choice!
Crochet Lingo:
CH: Chain
HDC: Half Double Crochet
SC: Single Crochet
The Pattern:
Start:
Start with a slip knot and CH 25. This is the base of your hat.
CH 1 to get ready for the next row.
Row 2:
HDC in each CH across, then CH 1 at the end of the row.
Row 3 and beyond:
Repeat Row 2 as many times as needed until the piece is long enough to fit your head. (You’ll fold it later, so you can make it a little shorter if you'd like a cuffed look.)
Tip: If you want a little "lip" to flip up like a beanie, make sure to crochet enough rows for the length that suits you.
Finishing the Hat:
Once you have the desired length ( I did 40 Rows )
fold the rectangle in half lengthwise.
To form the top, fold the top edge down to the first row and sew the sides together using single crochet.
Tip: You'll need to sew one side, cut the yarn, and then repeat on the other side.
Flip the hat inside out so the seam is hidden, and voilà! Your very own cozy cat hat is complete! 😻
And there you have it!
This pattern is simple, but it makes such a cute, warm, and fun accessory.
Whether you're off to a chilly adventure or just want to add some feline flair to your day, this cat hat is sure to make you smile.
Let me know if you end up making one – I’d love to see your creations!
